Mini Dental Implants (MDIs) have changed the face of implant placement. Unlike full implant placement where multiple dental visits are required, MDIs eliminate the need for surgery. The development of long term MDIs now allows the dentist to place anchors in the jaw during one noninvasive treatment. The most common use for MDIs has been the stabilization of full or partial dentures, but now many are used to replace individual teeth with a crown. MDIs enhance the natural beauty of the smile and restore full functionality to the teeth.
Traditional full diameter implants still have a definite place, but unfortunately may require additional appointments and healing time due to being more surgical in nature. MDIs are amazingly free of these potential negatives and can be placed in areas where the larger implants simply did not fit.
How are Mini Dental Implants designed?
A MDI is a tiny dental implant (similar to a screw) that acts in place of a tooth root. The design and structure of MDIs promotes quick healing and long lasting results. The head portion of the mini-dental implant can be used to place a single crown or to secure and stabilize a denture or partial denture.
Key Benefits of Mini Dental Implants
- Does not require invasive surgery
- Firmer denture fit without adhesives or wobbling
- Quicker treatment time and reduced costs
- Can be placed where traditional implants are not anatomically practical
How are Mini Dental Implants placed?
Generally, Dr. Fuhrman is able to complete a MDI procedure in one visit. Prior to inserting MDIs, Dr. Fuhrman will use planning tools to find the best place to place them. In most cases, no stitching is required and no real discomfort is felt after the procedure.
